Wow! Is this ever a site for sore eyesand ears! You see, this site is a marriage between two of my favorite things as I find myself increasingly confined to my computer chair … innovative web design and the refreshing sounds of well crafted indie music.
CBCradio3.com once existed as an online Magazine publishing 105 issues over a 2.5 year period, and it was devoted to Canadian music and culture featuring streaming audio, online photo essays, music reviews, etc … Unfortunately this stellar project met it’s untimely demise in March 2005 due to budget cuts at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. I myself only discovered this gem of candiana recently while reading an American Flash developer’s blog in which he praised it’s widely recognized technical and artistic merit, including the prestigious New York Festivals award for Best Programming Format in 2004.

We all have heroes and people we’ve idolized growing up, and typically they’ll be athletes or entertainers although sometimes it may actually be someone close to you. So who are the real heroes for most of us ?

Until recently I was always looking up to Football players or Rock musicians, because that was what interested me the most, but as I get on in years I’ve grown in terms of the way I see the world and in determining what is really important in the grand scheme of things.

About 6 weeks ago while driving I was listening to another weekly radio broadcast on Alternative Radio, based in Boulder Colorado, which we get on a feed through our University station here (CJSW, 90.1 FM). This is a fascinating source of info from truly interesting people such as authors, independent journalists, political activists, and so on.

The Art Of Conversation

I admit I don’t have the most engaging personality, and I can only wish I had that golden ticket known as charisma … however I do feel I make an honest effort to listen and appear interested when someone else is speaking. But what do you do when someone yammers on and on and there’s no on/off switch ?

I’m talking about the Art of Conversation.

It’s only in recent years I’ve become fully aware of the dynamic that exists in the way we interact from one person to another, realizing I’d never before dwelled on the specifics of why I prefer the company of some more than others. When someone seems generally interested in what you’re doing or what you have to say, it triggers a subtle stimulation which in turn solicits a reciprocal action, and the result of this is usually a very satisfying conversation … for both parties.

LinklokWhen it comes to selling Merchandise online, there are quite a few options open to web designers, developers, and do-it-yourselfers everywhere. The open-source platform of PHP and MySQL has spawned a few viable ecommerce systems that are Free to download and allow you to set up and customize a fully operational online store in a matter of weeks. However, there’s a bit of a learning curve when first tackling a CMS, especially one that involves processing payments, cataloging shipments and customer orders, generating invoices, complex inventory and display options, and so much more . . .

My favorites in this category are ZenCart and osCommerce, because they are widely used, widely supported, and despite some tricky aspects to customizing their appearance, they basically work right out of the box after a relatively easy installation, and you can’t help but feel pretty satisified with yourself at being able to set up an online store all by yourself …….. well, along with the help of several people who were able to answer your desperate pleas on the User Forums that is . . .

CMS: Content Management System
(photo from www.joomla.org)
When starting out as a Web Designer, there’s a point where you feel like you’re finally getting the hang of creating some slick HTML pages with valid CSS layouts, and the learning curve on creating professional looking web graphics is getting shorter too, and you’re even picking up some Javascript and PHP along the way! However … even after all this work to get your web pages looking good while maintaining proper web standards and cross-browser compatibility, now the client wants the ability to edit their own pages because the content changes regularly. Not only that, but they’ve also decided they want their website to be able to do a bunch of other stuff (Store, Blog, User Submitted Content) especially since they’ve noticed other websites doing lots of really cool stuff!
